Artificial intelligence in the industry

For many years the use of artificial intelligence (AI) has been an important topic in countless industries, and that's true for the manufacturing business as well. Just now with the rise of digitalization and the transformation to Industry 4.0 more data is becoming digitally available. Particularly in management circles the use of AI has been desired as an alleged panacea. We have introduced AI in many industrial work flows. So we want to give a quick summary of the current possibilities and our estimation of which areas in production and mechanical engineering will be influenced the most by the use of AI.
 

A quick summary of established practices

Basically artificial intelligence comprises two statistical learning methods, supervised learning and unsupervised learning.

From this the term supervised could be a bit deceptive, it refers to whether the learning progress of the neural network can be observed. Concretely this means with supervised learning a relation between input parameters and (known!) output parameters should be found. They are both made available to the algorithm. For example in the form of dog and cat photos, which will be labelled as such, or photos of acceptable and scrap products which are labelled accordingly as well.

 

Applications in the industry

The following table gives a summary of which AI methods are interesting or relevant for which applications. Particularly by bringing together the already available different data silos from the production, new applications can be found.
